Forty days is a term for a unit of time known and accepted in Judaism. Many times we hear about people who took on various tasks for forty days, and not for nothing. Forty days has a special importance, the customs and virtues practiced throughout this period of time derived from this importance.

 

 

Moshes’ ascent to the mountain is mentioned (שמות כד, יח). “ויבא משה בתוך הענן ויעל אל ההר ויהי משה בהר ארבעים יום וארבעים לילה לחם לא אכל ומים לא שתה ויכתוב על הלוחות את דברי הברית עשרת הדברים”. (שמות לד, כח). “בעלותי ההרה לקחת לוחות האבנים לוחות הברית אשר כרת ה’ עמכם ואשב בהר ארבעים יום וארבעים לילה לחם לא אכלתי ומים לא שתיתי”. (דברים ט, ט).

 

Eliyahu Hanavi did not eat for forty days, as it is said (מלכים א יט,ח.) “ויקם ויאכל וישתה וילך בכח האכילה ההיא ארבעים יום וארבעים לילה עד הר האלוקים חרב”.

 

A mikvah is kosher only if it contains forty se’ah, this is taught in the Gemara (עירובין ד:) שנאמר (ויקרא טו, טז) “ורחץ את כל בשרו”, דורשים! מים שכל גופו עולה בהן. וכמה הן? אמה על אמה ברום שלש אמות, ושיערו חכמים שיעור מי מקוה ארבעים סאה. כשנחלק ארבעים סאה ללוגין נקבל תתק”ס.

 

 

In Sefer ‘Mishnat Chasidim by Rabbi Emanuel Chai Riki it is stated that if one sits forty days without idle conversation, one will achieve without a doubt Ruach Hakoddesh.

 

Prayer near the relic of our temple forty days

 

Many practice that, when they want their request to be fulfilled, they pour out their hearts, near the remnant of our temple, the Western Wall (Kotel), for forty days. It is not clear when this practice started, what is famous is that the Rabbi Shlomo of Zvill sent a woman to pray for forty days at the Kotel and she cannot do this, and he did it for her and indeed she had salvation.

 

It is possible to hang things on the words of the Midrash (פר’ ואתחנן): מהו בכל קראנו אליו? אמרו רבנן: יש תפילה שנענית לארבעים יום. ממי את למד? ממשה, דכתיב “ואתנפל לפני ה’ מ’ יום” וגו’ ויש תפילה שנעשית לכ’ יום ממי את למד מדניאל וכו’.
